Most tourists will associate Dutch canals with Amsterdam. However, Leiden, Delft and Utrecht also have plenty of canals. Canals are truly an iconic part of the Netherlands. The water used to function as drinking water, an ingredient in beer, and open sewers (yes, all at the same time). Now, canals symbolise a massive boost in biodiversity within Dutch cities. Unfortunately, trash and bicycles tend to end up in the water. Have people forgotten that the canals haven’t been filled with sewage for centuries?
